In order to improve and expand the communication of information, a number of special functions are provided. These range from new means for the presentation of data (Audio and Video Functions) to methods of saving one's personal notes (Note Functions) to finding information (Search Functions) to obtaining a printed copy (Print Functions).

AUDIO FUNCTIONS

Audio files are digital presentations of sounds that aid in the communication of data -- vocalization during sleep, the discharge of units, the sound of an intracellular electrode penetrating a cell in a sleeping animal, etc. In certain cases, sounds are the data, as in the nuances of respiratory efforts during sleep.

When an article contains audio data, an audio icon appears in the appropriate place in the text (as with a reference) and in the margin of the article.


VIDEO FUNCTIONS

SRO articles utilize various video technologies to present information that can best or only be communicated by this means. REM Sleep Behavior Disorder and Restless Legs Syndrome are "naturals" for capitalizing on the video presentation of data, i.e., "moving pictures". These files, and accompanying audio data, are indicated by a video icon in the text and in the margin of the article.

NOTE FUNCTIONS

SRO articles contain two types of unique personal note pads. A series of yellow "Post-it" type pads comprise "ShortNotes", which are available throughout each article along the left-hand margin. ShortNotes are used to record a personal thought on a specific part of an article. Figures and Tables also have their own ShortNotes. A larger "NoteBook" is located at the top of each page; it is used to record longer notes, one's ideas about the subject matter, concepts for future experiments, etc. To use either note pad, type in any text you wish, click on "Enter", and your thoughts will appear in your personal, private ShortNotes or NoteBook, both of which are permanent and password-protected. One can even select parts of the text and copy it into either of the note pads along with one's commentary. The note pads can be printed or retrieved any time you return to SRO.

PRINT FUNCTIONS

The SRO Print Functions allow one to print any article (with two-column, justified text, figures embedded in the page, etc.), as well as references, note pads, figures, etc. Simply click on the "Print" button, that's all you have to do!

SEARCH FUNCTIONS

The entire contents of SRO can be searched in a variety of ways, for all types of information. How about finding all articles dealing with in situ hybridization and sleep?

Perhaps you are interested in those articles whose titles contain "serotonin" or "Process S". The SRO Search Function allows information to be automatically retrieved from all articles in SRO, on any subject, by any author, within any time frame with only a couple of simple keystrokes.
